Of Course You Have Skills And Talents You Can Use In Retirement!

I can’t tell you how often I hear people who are contemplating retirement say, “but I don’t know how to do anything except my job.” Baloney! You have skills and you have talents. You might have buried them in the back yard, but they are still there. What is more, if you held a job or ran a household — YOU HAVE SKILLS AND TALENTS.

Some people seem to think that the moment they retire, either they forget everything they know and everything they know how to do. Then when they they want to find a way to become involved in the community or a non-profit organization, they think they have nothing to offer. When they think about finding a part-time job, they think they have no skills or talents anyone will want. Many even think they can’t discover new and meaningful ways to fill their time.

The challenge for many people is in understanding that all the skills and abilities and talents they learned and cultivated through the years are still important and applicable to new situations. It is really a simple matter of learning to value ourselves, our abilities, and think differently about how our talents can be used.

For example, if you ran a household with several children, you are probably an organizational wizard. You have time management skills, planning skills, counseling skills, communication skills, plus quite a number of other useful skills. You simply need to learn to think about the responsibilities, functions and tasks you performed day after day and break out individual skills. Once you have done that, you need to think about them in the abstract.

If you managed to get three children to afterschool activities in different parts of town at the same time and got them all back home again, you have planning and time management skills. Those skills are adaptable. You can use those skills to figure out other logistical and time management challenges. You might be an excellent delivery planner for a floral shop — you can chart out a logical order for the deliveries to be made that will meet all the deadlines, save gas, and save time. You’ve been doing it for years! Now, if you want, you can do it for a little extra income.

Were you the person who ran all the fund raisers for school activities for the PTA for a number of years? Are you good at figuring out what needs to happen in what order to put together a successful school fundraising event? Did you break records in finding ways to raise money for band uniforms and travel? You have event planning skills and fund-raising skills. You would be very valuable to a non-profit organization or a community organization.

Do you love art, know a great deal about it, and love sharing that information? Why not volunteer as a tour guide for an art gallery or museum?

The possibilities before us in re-firement are limitless. We simply need to think more creatively about the skills and talents we possess and explore opportunities to use them in new and exciting ways.

If you are stuck breaking free of restricting thinking about your abilities and talents, call me. I’ll help you rediscover your abilities and find exciting and fulfilling ways to transfer your skills and talents.

Hypnosis And Fear Of Flying

Sometimes people suffer from a level of anxiety so high when up in the air, that they simply cannot function. When anxiety over flying gets to that point, it becomes fear of flying. Especially for people in business, commercial air flight has become a part of the landscape. Business men and women are being asked to travel all over the shrinking world to close jobs and work on business deals. If you cannot fly because of a high level of anxiety, then you are at a marked disadvantage in this business world. Fear of flying is really just a mental block that you can overcome. It takes a little bit of work, though.

Does the thought of heading up into the sky make your skin crawl? Are you overcome with a healthy dose of anxiety each time you sit in an airplane? If this is the case, then you have a fear of flying. This is not at all uncommon, though. People all over the world suffer from this common phobia. Fear of flying generally comes from preconceived notions about flying that have been developed and never changed. If they are left unattended, you will probably never be able to board an airplane to head across the ocean. As mentioned, this can really handcuff those folks who need to fly for business or family reasons.

Since fear of flying is a mental condition, you will have to have a serious change in thinking in order to get over the fear. Though it isn’t easy to shake a phobia like fear of flying, it is possible if you get the right treatment. One such treatment that I have found to be successful in stopping fear of flying is hypnotherapy. In my years as a practicing hypnotherapist, I have treated people for a bunch of common mental ailments. I have helped people get over their smoking, their drug addictions, and their gambling addiction. Fear of flying is no different than those things.

Hypnosis is a serious thing for serious problems. It is a treatment that can help people get over some of the most serious problems that they face in everyday life. Though many people don’t consider hypnosis when they are discussing their options for different problems, it is worth considering. If you have problems with flying, then get some information on hypnotherapy. It could be the best decision that you have ever made.

Create Happiness With A Positive Life Outlook

The mind is the molder of our personal and communal world.

Every event we perceive through our senses is analyzed, evaluated and registered in the mind as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. Our belief systems seek to determine whether each perceived input is something, which will “protect” or “endanger” our security, self-worth and / or freedom.

When life’s events are interpreted by our programmed mind as threatening, fearful or unpleasant, we experience a state of anxiety and tension. When anxiety and nervous tension become a chronic situation, then the body and mind are gradually worn down into a state of weakness and ill health. A psychosomatic illness is created.

The energy flow, concentration and clarity of the mind are disturbed. Organs begin to malfunction. Negative emotional states such as depression, bitterness, fear, anger, hate, envy, jealousy and resentment dominate the mind. Our relationships begin to deteriorate and a feeling of alienation can set it. It is time for

Develop Your Self-esteem

Esteem is a simple word. It is worth and value that we apply to people, places, and situations. We have esteem when a professional puts in an exemplary performance whether it is in sports, acting, or simply doing the right thing.

But the most important place we need to apply esteem is within ourselves. We must maintain our self-esteem in order to place value on ourselves as a worthy individual in the world.

Self-esteem affects every single part of our lives creating a miserable place if it is low and a vibrant up beat place when it is balanced. Elevating esteem so that it is at an empowering level for ourselves could very well be the key to happiness in life.

It is important that when you aim for high self-esteem, it is not at the level of thinking you are “better” or more “superior” to another, but instead it is at a level where you are okay with you, others and the world.

That’s also the difference between arrogance and loving yourself. There is nothing wrong with knowing how great you are. In fact it is an important element of self-esteem self-love. However, when we believe we are better than other people, or more superior, that’s just plain arrogance and is best avoided at all costs.

Most people’s feelings and thoughts about themselves fluctuate somewhat based on their daily experiences. The grade you get on an exam, how your friends treat you, ups and downs in a romantic relationship-all can have a temporary impact on your wellbeing. This is because people collapse an event and what it means about them.

So if you are in the selling profession you may believe you are an excellent sales person when you sell 8 out of 10 products, but not when you sell 2 out of 10. You are the same person whether you are selling 2 products or 8 products. It is important to separate your behavior and what it “means” about you. Instead of celebrating the fact that you made 8 sales and being misery when you only made 2 sales, celebrate the fact that you are engaged in the art of selling. Enjoy the actions you take, rather than the end result. That way whether you sell 2 or 8 is irrelevant because you will be thinking how great you are for just being out there selling something.

Your own self-esteem, however, is something more fundamental than the normal “ups and downs” associated with situational changes. For people with good basic self-esteem, normal “ups and downs” may lead to temporary fluctuations in how they feel about themselves, but only to a limited extent. In contrast, for people with poor basic self-esteem, these “ups and downs” may make all the difference in the world.

Healthy self-esteem is based on our ability to assess ourselves accurately (know ourselves) and still be able to accept and to value ourselves unconditionally. This means being able to realistically acknowledge our strengths and limitations (which is part of being human) and at the same time accepting ourselves as worthy and worthwhile without conditions or reservations.
Raising your self-esteem to levels that will enhance your life and the way you view life is a journey worth embarking on. It can make a tremendous difference in your quality of life. Learning techniques to raise self-esteem can be taught and put into practice in just a few days. However, it will take practice to keep your self-worth at the forefront.

There is a common mis-conception that people with a good level of self-esteem feel great about themselves every day and never have to do any work to keep themselves there, but that is just not true.

No one goes to the gym for a few weeks after 10 years or more of inactivity and expects to be totally fit within weeks. No one would go to the gym for a few weeks and then decide they have gone long enough and don’t need to go anymore. No one would go to the gym after years of inactivity, get fit, and then never return again. They will need to return at least 3 or 4 times a week to maintain their fitness levels.

So why then do people think that self-esteem is something that can be acquired in a weekend, or within weeks? Why is it people moan and complain if after a few months of working on their self esteem they are thinking better about themselves but are still slipping back? Why is it that people believe once they have great esteem they can just stop, and it will remain that way forever?

Maybe I will never know the answer to those questions! But what I ask is that you get ready to commit yourself to however long it takes. The time is going to go anyway so why not be productively working on your self-esteem until it is automatically integrated into your very being, and even then accept that sometimes your life will not go to plan, but that does not have to effect what you think about who you are.

How to Acquire Anything and Everything You Wish For The Power of your Thoughts

While I was growing up, my mother used mention that many times whatever she thought about appeared magically into her life and the same rule applied when she thought of something she did not want! She also used to say that if she wanted something badly that kept eluding her; she would not get it UNLESS she stopped feeling bad about NOT having it.

I never gave this much thought until I came across the concept of Manifestation and Manifesting Mindset. I was amazed to discover that what my mother used to mention in passing was actually a Universal Law… the Law of Attraction.

In simple words, the Law of Attraction maintains that we create the life that we are living! Whatever we think and whatever we feel we receive. You draw to yourself those experiences that match your beliefs; be they conscious or unconscious.

The question arises why some of our desires never materialize, no matter how much we think about them? The answer to this is that you might be focusing more on the negative aspect of your desire. For example, you may really want to go on a trip to the Caribbean but never seem to be able to get there. One thing or the other keeps popping up hat delays your plans. Try to concentrate on what goes on in your mind when you think about your vacation. Perhaps every time you think about going to the Caribbean, you focus on thoughts like, “oh, I will never be able to make it there… I will never have enough money… my boss would never let me take time off…I have so many other things to do… Even if I manage everything else, with my luck something will come up etc”. What happens is that your FOCUS on the negative aspects manifests all the undesirable events you do not want.

There are certain requirements for pleasant things to manifest in your life:

– First of all, be grateful for what you already have been provided. The thankful get more!

– Be clear on what you want. Think of your desires in a very specific manner, with all the details that you can think of. You HAVE to make a choice and then explain that choice to yourself before you can receive what you want.

– Once you are clear on what you want, wish for it as if you already have it. Do not let the unpleasant “wanting” feeling mar your manifestation magic. Imagine in detail how you would feel having it. It is imperative that you put your emotions into it.

– Always think of your desires in a positive way and frame your thoughts positively. For example, thinking that you DO NOT want to be fat, you DO NOT want to be shy in public or you DO NOT want to be a lazy couch potato will not work. Instead, say, “My weight is within the healthy range for my height”, “I am outgoing and confident”, “I exercise regularly” etc.

– Release your desire to the Universe (substitute this word with God, Higher Being, Higher Self as you like). Do not worry about the “hows”, “what” is all you need to focus on!

– Once your desires materialize, do not forget to be thankful. This is VERY important!

Oh, and let me be very clear about one thing… do not think that just sitting in your room and visualizing a certain outcome without taking any action will get you what you desire. It is very necessary to keep your eyes open for any opportunities being provided to you to obtain your goal and to grab them.

I have given you a simplified version of the Universal Laws of Attraction and how to utilize them to get your way. I hope that I have sparked enough interest in you to try these techniques in your life and to try and find ways to become a Master Manifestor.

May all our dreams come true!!

How To Stop Being The Average American!

Break Out of Your Box!

The average American lifestyle goes something like this: We drive to work in a box, we sit for 8 hours inside a box (affectionately referred to by some as a cubicle), we drive home in a box, then we sit in front of our box TV (and if we’re really doing well in life it’s actually more of a flat rectangle), we throw a box dinner in the microwave and then go hop in our box bed for sleep. This cycle continues day after day, week after week.

Some may try to vary the routine or change their state of mind by drinking an alcoholic beverage or eating tons of sugar, but this will never give them the feeling of well-being that good health and fitness can provide. There is just no way that an overweight body which is oxygen-deprived can be happy. No wonder we are a country of fat, exhausted, and depressed people. WE HAVE TO BREAK OUT OF OUR BOXES!

Oh I have had my own moments of being fat, exhausted, or depressed. At times I would be out of breath just going up 14 stairs to the second floor of my home. How depressing is that? Well, I didn’t remain in that condition forever, and I much prefer my life now – fit, energized, and happy. Believe it or not, a large part of the answer to my troubles was discovered with kettlebells and the multiple health benefits they provide.

Not Your Average Exercise

There is no other exercise out there that tones your body like kettlebells do. They provide a unique combination of strength and cardio exercise to build endurance and stamina like no other workout. It is hard not to feel good when your body is being pumped full of oxygen and you are using muscles like they were meant to be used. I dare you to come to one of my classes and then tell me you’re depressed afterwards – it’s simply not possible! I have exercised my entire life but I have never felt so fully alive until I started working out with kettlebells.

I tried the gym, but I didn’t find what I was looking for. The treadmill did nothing for me and was boring. I lifted weights but noticed no change in my muscles. I began lifting more but my muscles were still nowhere to be found, and it certainly was not helping my back pain or energy level. Now understand, I’m not trying to knock the gym… but for me it just wasn’t the right answer, and I know I am not the only one out there with the same story.

I started working with the kettlebell in November and by December my back pain was gone and I felt more energetic than I had in years. I continued my routine and soon I was getting muscles all over. My abdominals were stronger than I could ever imagine. I could see and feel the fat melting away. My body became strong, supported, and erect not the floppy mess that it was. I am now able to use my body to the fullest, and my energy is through the roof. This allows me to see my chiropractic patients until 6:15 at night and then I teach a kettlebell class for an hour, four nights a week. I have more energy now at 40 than when I was in my twenties.

Results in the Real World

Tiffany is my 20-year-old receptionist and is very fit. She usually goes to the gym five nights a week and works out for two or more hours. She heard the buzz about kettlebells and their butt-kicking potential but was very skeptical — they looked too simple and unassuming. After all, she had a trainer at her gym who would put her through what was supposed to be a gut-wrenching workout one that would leave her ‘feeling the burn’. But afterwards she felt no increase in energy and wasn’t even sore. She then took my hour-long kettlebell class and said she had never worked out so hard in her life. She realized that she had used muscles for the first time that she never even knew existed.

Putting a load on your muscles over time builds stamina and endurance. The body is now able to tolerate activities of daily living with ease. Instead of lumbering up the stairs and being out of breath you will be able to run up them with energy to spare. The ballistic nature of kettlebells is what gives you the power, strength, and stamina to get through your day. To raise the kettlebell over your head repeatedly you have to use all your muscles and cardiovascular endurance. 15-20 minutes a day is all you need to give your body an amazing workout. Even if you begin with five minutes of swings a day you will start to feel changes in your body.

I have a woman in my class in her early 60’s named Connie. She has never been able to do a sit-up. Never, not even as a child. She is now able to do sit-ups because she has strengthened her abs and entire body doing nothing more than swings and snatches. Pretty powerful! It was after one of my classes she got pulled over by the police for speeding. She was so excited that she could do a sit-up that she didn’t realize how fast she was going. It’s energizing to have Connie in class because she keeps challenging her body to improve. She will line up three different sizes of kettlebells and will start with the heaviest one. If her form wavers she moves to the next smaller size. She is now using her body as it was meant to be used. As she keeps up the work she will be stronger and more fit than she has ever been.

A Meditative Workout

As demanding as it may be, a kettlebell workout has a meditative quality to it, allowing the mind to become quiet and calm. When I am snatching the 24 kg bell I am focusing on nothing other than doing it with proper form. I focus on my breathing, my core, and my squatting position. There are no thoughts about what’s for dinner, the dirty laundry, unopened mail or tomorrow’s schedule. All of your attention is on the bell and your body. Your mind is clear and focused. Most of us have that awful monkey-chatter going on in our head. “I’m too fat, I’m ugly, I don’t make enough money, my life sucks.” In a kettlebell class your mind is clear for at least 15-20 minutes as oxygen is pumping through your body, and you are feeling more powerful than you thought you could be. Can you remember the last time you felt that? It may seem minor as you sit there reading about it, but it’s powerful to experience and begins paving a path that can quickly bring benefits to many aspects of your life.

Are Kettlebells For You?

You may be wondering if kettlebells can work for you. Start by thinking about exercise programs or products you have tried in the past. Now consider the characteristics and benefits of kettlebells and decide for yourself.

1. They are easy to use. You don’t have to add weight onto a machine or change elastic bands. You don’t have to know how to dance or have rhythm. Once you have learned the correct technique for two simple moves – the ‘snatch’ and the ‘swing’ – you are ready to go. There is not a big learning curve.

2. They can be used anywhere. Kettlebell exercise requires very little space. I started working out in a hallway near my living room, which was a very small area. I have worked out in my garage, the parking lot at my office, in my yard, and in a hotel room. Kettlebells are small enough to take anywhere and you can store yours under your bed, under your desk, behind a door, or in your car.

3. They are effective. You will work on your cardio, strength, and flexibility in just 15-20 minutes a day. Most of us who worked out in the gym are used to isolating muscles. When doing a bicep curl you use the bicep only and no other muscle. That’s why it takes so long to do all the exercises in a gym. With kettlebells you use all the muscles in your body to perform the exercises. There are no separate exercises because the butt, abs, legs, and arms all get worked at the same time.

4. They are challenging and fun. People stop going to the gym because it gets old. I usually will stop an exercise six months after I start because I get bored and I don’t get the changes I expected. I have been doing kettlebells four times per week for a year and I haven’t gotten bored yet. There are so many exercise choices that you never lose interest. Figure eights, cleans, clean and jerk, hot potato, lunges… the list goes on. If an exercise is fun, gives you results and isn’t time consuming you will stick with it. That exercise is kettlebells.

5. They will strengthen your weak or strained areas. I’m a Chiropractor, and recognize that kettlebells strengthened my spine and core so that I no longer have back pain. I tried pilates, yoga, weight lifting, treadmill, elliptical, bicycle, walking and aerobics –all of them worsened my pain. With kettlebells I am now pain-free. I have clients with shoulder pain, hip pain, back pain, and neck pain. Many of my patients have been to multiple physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists some with minimal change in their pain. All have experienced improvement by using kettlebells. I got my Russian Kettlebell Certification (RKC), not just to teach the average person, but to help my patients when they had no quality of life due to pain and weakness. It warms my heart when I see someone’s life start to change.

6. They will save you money. I’m not talking about the price of the kettlebell. I am talking about the money you will save on doctor bills. When I injured my back there was an entire year when I was being seen 3-4 times per week for chiropractic adjustments, 2-3 times a month for acupuncture and twice a month for massage. That sure adds up. The kettlebell price is also very reasonable considering it will last a lifetime you can’t wear them out!

7. They will help you break out of the box! They will prevent you from being a typical American. You will no longer be able to sit at your desk for longer than 20 minutes because you will notice how strange it feels not to move. You will begin to eat better because you will take more pride in your body. When you are pushing your body to new limits it begins to naturally crave different sources of fuel. You will be fit, energized and happy because your body will be functioning at a higher level.

The Power to Break Out of Your Box

How can kettlebells change your life? They will give you power. Physically you will be stronger than you ever imagined. But you will also be amazed at the other changes in your life. I have become more powerful in all areas of my life. My business is better, my interactions with others have improved, my whole outlook on life is better. I have a sense of confidence and know I can do anything I want to. Bring on whatever life has to offer…because I’m ready. Kettlebells have given me this power. I want you to experience these same changes for yourself. It’s time to pick up your kettlebell now and stop being the average American!

Equity Theory And Employee Motivation

In business, the Equity Theory of employee motivation describes the relationship between how fairly an employee perceives he is treated and how hard he is motivated to work. Peter Drucker, an author who specialized in economics, first proposed the link between Equity Theory and employee motivation.

The basic idea behind the Equity Theory is that workers, in an attempt to balance what they put in to their jobs and what they get from them, will unconsciously assign values to each of his various contributions.

In addition to their time, workers contribute their experience, their qualifications, and their capability in addition to their personal strengths such as acumen and ambition. Money, of course, is the primary motivating outcome for an employee, but it is not the only, and in some cases not even the most important, factor. Power and status are also prime motivators, as are flexibility, perquisites and variety.

According to the Equity Theory, the most highly motivated employee is the one who perceives his rewards are equal to his contributions. If he feels that he is working and being rewarded at about the same rate as his peers, then he will judge that he is being treated fairly.

This doesn’t mean that every manager should treat every employee identically, because every worker does not measure his contributions in the same way. For example, flexible working hours might motivate a working mother even more than a pay raise. Conversely, though an across-the-board wage increase may delight most employees, the highest producers may become less motivated if they perceive that they are not being rewarded for their ambition. Research on Equity Theory and employee motivation has shown that, in general, over-rewarded employees will produce more and of a higher quality than will under-rewarded, less motivated employees.

How To Turn The Dream Into A Reality

The first step is to understand that in order to achieve success you must take action. Inertia is the most common reason for lack of success!

What is your dream? Your goals for the future? What do you want to achieve in your life in the next week? month? year? 5 years? What would you like people to remember you for after you have left this world?

Think big – challenge yourself. Reach for the stars!

Be clear about where you are now. Audit your strengths and areas for development

What needs to be done to eliminate the gap between your dream and the reality?

Prioritize Look for quick wins, consider those things which will have maximum long term impact. Build solid foundations, think of sustainability!

Set challenging but realistic targets. Aim high.

Communicate your vision, and keep doing so. Ensure that all stake holders understand and subscribe to the same vision.

Who do you need to involve? How will you ensure they sign up to and stay committed to the vision?

Think about the language you use sound positive, if others think you are confident it can be achieved they will gain confidence too. Develop a “Can do” mentality within your staff. For every problem there is a solution, encourage others to see themselves as problem solvers not problem givers.

Create clear lines of communication which operate at every level and in all directions.

Break each priority down into small achievable steps, involve your team.

Who needs to do what by when? Set a timetable

Identify the roles and responsibilities for all staff; ensure that staff take ownership without creating a “jobs worth” approach.

Ensure that people are appropriately trained and that training is constantly updated.

Build in the monitoring and review process from the start so you can evaluate performance and be prepared to adjust as necessary. (By creating a culture of development rather than blame huge potential will be released.)

Celebrate success! and remember to thank people for their contribution, give credit where it due and be generous with it.

Develop professional honesty within your staff, constructive feed back can be invaluable.

Finally leave your ego behind as it will simply get in the way of your success.

A Moment Can Change a Life

A fleeting moment can change your life.

Christopher Reeves had everything going for him – fame, fortune and best of all a loving wife and son. Enjoying his favorite sport, he fell off his horse. In a split second, his whole life changed! He is not alone.

In a moment, all dreams can be quashed.

A young man, full of promise gets into an industrial accident. It left him physically disabled. With a young family and the first baby on the way, how does he feel?

There are those who take a severe stroke which leave them with physical disability and rob them of their mobility. They suffer the loss of their independence. Some endure the loss of speech for the rest of their lives. There goes most of their dreams. Life will never be the same.

Some suffer severe financial loss and see everything they worked for taken away from them and there is nothing they can do.

Think of the victims of the tsunami and Katrina. Many are making an effort to rebuild their lives – but will it ever be the same?

On the bright side of a winning moment – a big-time win from the lottery or gaming table spells a major change in one’s life. These winners go through a major change in their lives.

There is an upside. There are some lucky ones who find strength in their illness and disabilities, major financial setbacks, calamities and crimes of violence. Amid the dark hours and pain, they work their way to find a new meaning in their lives. With courage, perseverance and a strong spirit, they win their battles. They become pillars in their communities.

Christopher Reeves spent the rest of his years as a quadraplegic to champion the cause of spinal cord injury. His disability never stopped him.

An illness, an accident, natural calamities, financial loss, crime, violence and loss of a loved one, a winfall, an unexpected career change or opportunity are realities of our world.

Many of us think it will not happen to us, but it can. Live for today. No one knows what tomorrow brings.
